Mable Kinzie is an Associate Professor of Instructional Technology at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education.  She specializes in user-centered instructional and informational design, based on needs assessment and validated through rapid prototyping and continuous evaluation.  Her methods draw on learning and psycho-social theories and employ proven user-interface design practices.  Delivery media range from interactive multimedia on the web, to instructor-led class/workshop packages, to self-guided stand-alone modules. 
 
Kinzie has produced over 40 instructional/interactive products and 30 publications, with products in use for adult/life-long learning, e-learning, Pre-K and K-12 education, and consumer/public health education, among other areas.  She has led qualitative and quantitative evaluation efforts for intact products and programs, directed pilot tests/trials, analyzed data, and produced research reports.

Kinzie’s work has earned a number of awards:

  • Instructional design (Outstanding Instructional Design Practice, Association for Educational Communications & Technology, 1988 [Project Director Susan Shaffer])
  • Instructional development (Over 40 “Best of the Web” awards for the Interactive Frog Dissection http://frog.edschool.virginia.edu)
  • Scholarship (Young Scholar Award, Association for Educational Communications & Technology, 1990)
  • Faculty teaching, research, and service (1996 Harrison Outstanding Faculty Award)

She teaches graduate classes on instructional and interactive design, development, and research at the University of Virginia.
