The Casio Classroom - Casio provides much more than just calculator information on this interesting and broad-based site. Links include technical support, loaner program information (where Casio gives you the machine and you perform an in-service), workshops, and contests.

Hewlett Packard Calculators: Education - HP's site provides links to general education resources, HP-specific education resources, and other calculator-related sites.

TI Calculators and Educational Solutions - Just as you'd expect, this high-tech company offers a cutting edge web-site. With separate starting points for teachers, students, and parents, this site was designed with the user in mind.

Mathematics Publications

Mathematics Teacher - This web-site is the online wing of the NCTM's journal for teachers of high school math. It offers a great way to keep up with current debates in the field, innovative classroom practices, and breakthroughs in math education technology.

Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School - The NCTM's middle school counterpart to the Mathematics Teacher, this web-site does everything the mathematics Teacher does, just for grades six through eight. It frequently houses articles offering fundamental ways to foster algebraic thinking.

Virginia Mathematics Teacher - The VMT is published three times yearly by the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Mathematics Organizations

Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) -This is the home page of AWM,a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging women in the mathematical sciences. Equity issues and opportunities for women in math are the main concerns of this site.

AMS: American Mathematics Society - The AMS homepage offers teachers an easy opportunity to stay on top of the field of math education. Information about grants and fellowships, recent developments in the field, upcoming conferences, related authors and reviews, and much more is all at your fingertips thanks to this web-site.

Welcome to nctm.org: A Service of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics - There's too much to mention briefly at this stately web-site. Visit it as a means of staying on top of the field of math education.

Virginia Council for Teachers of Mathematics - This is the state chapter for the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics. While they don't have a web-site yet, they do provide a print publication--Virginia Mathematics Teacher. Information about the publication is provided through the above link.

Miscellaneous

Girls to the Fourth Power Algebra Program - This is the homepage of an organization committed to overcoming the "math block" that is widely perceived to affect many girls. Its goals include improving math skills and increasing the self-esteem and self-confidence of young women.

Hands-On Equations - This is the promotional web-site for a commercial product designed to teach algebraic concepts to math students from third grade all the way up to Algebra I. The basic premise of the "Hands-On" approach is that equations are like a triple-beam balance or a seesaw. Students learn basic algebraic principles by manipulating the materials.

Key Issues - This informative site is part of Swarthmore's sprawling math online offerings. The math education job market, ethical guidelines of the AMS,and equity issues for women and minorities are just a few of the topics covered. PBS Teachersource This potpourri of interesting and useful information includes lots of good stuff: a bank of lesson plans (sorry, it's divided by middle and high school, not by subject), a sample of algebra videos for sale and some math-related articles, to name just a few.

Scholastic: Professional Resources - This rich web-site is full of a diverse set of sections designed to address the life of a classroom teacher. Technology, classroom management and assessment are just three of the topics included. Insightful articles on each topic are provided as well as other pertinent information. Visit this sight to stay current on the latest classroom ideas and strategies.

Research Articles/Books

Beyond Formulas in Mathematics and Teaching: Dynamics of the High School Algebra Classroom, by Daniel Chazan (2000), Teachers College Press. Chazan's book is about really knowing your students, finding engaging material, and fostering meaningful classroom discussions.
